📢 2 PhD positions in ion channel research available!

I want to share our latest job offers for a carrier in science - we have 2 open positions starting in the beginning of next year for PhD students. PhD students will learn & employ the PatchClamp technique to investigate structure-function relationships and pharmacology of ion channels, mainly potassium channels.
Enthusiastic about science?
Maybe something to think about over the holidays?
Have a look (english text can be found below the official german version in the documents)!

Augh. Any electrophysiologists here? All of a sudden the recording electrode in one of my rigs has started vibrating a lot, making stable single unit recordings near impossible. Tightened every screw possible on the manipulator, clamped the headstage closer to the body of the manipulator to minimize the lever arm, made sure the air table had good pressure, added a weight to the platform that the manipulator sits on... But still, the vibrations are going strong. What can I try next?

Neuroscientists and electrophysiologists of Mastodon, what would your top choice analysis tool be for a novice getting started with working with ECoG data? I have a graduate student I will be co-mentoring starting this Fall who is very bright but has no programming experience, and I'd like to help her get up and running as quickly as possible. I've generally been a roll-my-own-analyses type of electrophysiologist so I don't have a favorite framework to get her started with. I know EEGLAB is popular, but my main experience with it has been helping other people get their Matlab path working properly again after something in EEGLAB clobbers it. I've played with MNE in Python but it doesn't seem to be as purely-GUI as EEGLAB and I don't want her to get bogged down in learning Python before she can do any analyses at all.

So, what's your favorite tool for ECoG analysis? What would you recommend a student who's starting from zero background in electrophysiology or programming begin to learn in 2024?

Boosts for reach appreciated. I also just like hearing folks' opinionated takes on their research tools.

#preprint_alert about #astrocytes, the roadies of the brain!

PhD student Imke Schuurmans and team have come up with a comprehensive one-step #differentiation protocol for turning human #iPSCs directly into functional Astrocytes, and how to co-culture them with induced human neurons on multi-electrode arrays for #electrophysiology.

From my new group (Nadif Kasri lab @radboudumc @DondersInst)

Hi Everyone.

At the beginning of the year I received notice I've got my first funding as a new PI. It's for an ambitious project to look at how the main olfactory system in mice enables individualized social interactions. I wanted to hire a postdoc before, but now I really really want to hire a postdoc. If you know anyone who is at the right stage and might think the picture attached to this post looks cool, please can you share? There's a lot more to it than what's in the diagrams here.

The job ad is in several places including here:

Anyone know what this artifact is? This is the power spectrum for one channel out of 128 recorded with Neuronexus polytrodes using a Neuronexus Smartbox Pro. That weird regular set of peaks is on every channel. It's at subdivisions of the sampling frequency (30000 Hz). There is ostensibly a hardware antialiasing filter in effect at 15000 Hz. My internet searches have not proved enlightening. #neuroscience #electrophysiology #ephys
