@jimdonegan I'm on Linux Mint 20.3, and from that video, i'm not seeing any standout stuff to need to upgrade. I'm an icon hog, I like my desktop icons. And I noted he spoke more about what was taken out, rather than put in! Kinda going the way that Windows did after Vista, removing features rather than adding them. I'm also not a fan of flatpaks, after seeing how much disk space they eat up, compared to natively installed apps.
So I think I'll be sticking to 20.3.

@latelesley

Snap! Also, upgrading is a killer of stability. No matter how well things go there are always risks and little changes that you only notice as a hassle when it's too late. So I won't be upgrading for a while either, although I do switch up the kernel for new hardware support on a laptop used for music production.

@jimdonegan Yeah, that's one thing Mint is good at, is offering upgraded Kernels, while not being too cutting edge to cause stability problems. I keep mine up to date too. I'm on 5.15.0-56 just now. The good thing about Linux, is it doesn't force you to upgrade, unless you want to. So it's great for managing any quirks your own system may have, without being forced to upgrade.

@jimdonegan I just took the plunge and updated my desktop and laptop.... all went well I'm delighted to report!

@rainercade

Great! Which version did you upgrade from, if I might ask? And did you use the upgrade tool or do a fresh install?

@jimdonegan I had already gone from 20.3 to 21 back in October - just went 21 to 21.1 today - upgrades not a fresh intstall!

@rainercade

Interesting. I've been thinking about doing that but Clem's team do not recommend it. And this laptop is used for work so I hate to take chances. Backups are your friend, though!

@jimdonegan very true - but for work I'd urge extreme caution all right. My desktop and Laptop are non work units so doesn't really matter!

@jimdonegan Yes, currently using Cinnamon 21.1, works really well for me, using kernel 6.2.12 and MGLRU enabled, computer feels so snappy :o)
