This Is My Glasgow

The pillared and domed entrance to the A-Listed former Waverley Cinema in the Shawlands area of Glasgow.

Designed by Watson, Salmond and Gray, this was one of the city's first purpose-built cinemas. It opened in 1922 and could seat 1,320 people. It closed in 1973, and then followed the typical life-cycle of old Glasgow cinemas by becoming a bingo hall, then a snooker club, then lying empty for a prolonged period of time.

@thisismyglasgow
Sadly when a city loses 50% of its population who paid the highest rates (now council tax) the ability to take on the cost of maintaining valued old buildings has to be balanced against higher priorities, education, social welfare etc.
Where are the philanthropic billionaires when you need them?

His name escapes me, but decades ago the Celtic chairman saved Provands Lordship,
can anyone tell me of a similar event recently?

@Clutha Yes, that is a huge issue for Glasgow. Over the years, it has lost huge amounts of its sources of income. Firstly, from the loss of the utilities it ran (water, gas, electricity etc), then through the loss of its suburbs as a tax-payers. It's almost like someone in the Westminster government was trying to purposely destory Glasgow as a regional power-house with strong and historic socialist leanings ...

@thisismyglasgow Memories of Saturday mornings at the ABC Minors there, Everlasting Strips and Spanish Gold "tobacco": healthy eating!
Until I saw your post, I hadn't realised the Waverley was Category A listed.
