Personally I think the quality of the representation is far more important than the representative being local. I can think of a few planks around me that I'd be horrified if they rocked up to #Westminster as my MP.

If the representative is effective AND local, even better...

That's my whole point. It didn't matter if he represented a #Scottish or #English constituency. He was Scottish & his place of birth had little bearing on people voting #Labour.

It's the character & effectiveness of the person that matters most, albeit I concede it helps if the candidate also has a local connection too.

A Londoner who doesn't know the area, being shipped into Caithness because they presumably cant find anyone more qualified to stand is not in any way equivalent to a British MP becoming British PM. I could easily say why didn't RH Gordon Brown represent #Scottish #Labour, & stay away from Westminster? I didn't, because I couldn't care less where the best & most effective candidate comes from, looks like, his colour, religion or sexual orientation

Your clear misunderstanding of the difference between MPs and MSPs is just making you look silly.
If Gordon Brown had been an MSP, sitting in the Scottish Parliament and only representing Scotland, he would clearly be unable to have become UK PM. He wasn't. He was a British MP at Westminster. Same as all the other British MPs.

I'm aware of that, BUT it's NOT what you want is it? You want an independent, separate #Scotland, so stop with all this Unionist "We're all #British" rubbish will ya?

@AnthonyFStevens @Theriac @Wen @soren And, until then, we are part of the UK. Once we become independent, you would have a point, but right now, you don't. Who is eligible to be a UK MP isn't dependent on the wishes of one independence supporting voters. Unless you seriously believe that only English MPs are qualified to represent the whole UK at a time when the UK still exists, you should give it on this particular line of argument.

HOWEVER, you've hit the nail on the head that for now we're all part of the #UK, so different rules apply. This brings us nicely full circle to why I'll vote #Labour at #GE2024 & why I think they're the best hope (in my humble opinion) for the WHOLE of the UK!

I'm genuinely interested in the #Scottish point of view, albeit this wasn't the intention of my post. I've learned a lot, especially regarding the paranoia of some #Scottish nationalist who seem to view everyone as the enemy. We're not!

I honestly hope you've learned something & that I've given you some food for thought. Peace
