I'm still re-reading the #TomClancy #JackRyan novels and the thing that keeps hitting me is how bad Clancy was at anything non-military.
There's a distinct lack of a good copy editor by the time of Debt Of Honor, too. Several times things, obviously dictated by the author, are replaced with nonsense homophones and one has to work out what the intended text was.
I read about an issue years ago...
Apparently Costco - which basically only carried a few best-sellers as far as books went - was regularly selling books printed in China. No problem there. Except that the legitimate publishers of many of those books had no printing done in China.
They were selling counterfeit/pirated dead-tree books. And apparently many of them ended up with lots of spelling, grammar, and other mistakes not in the originals. Tom Clancy was a regular at Costco.
