@jonberger It’s one of those tunes, like Jackie Latin, that seems to have spread like wildfire and appears in loads of collections from the early 1700s. Cannae keep a good tune down!

@bagpie We use that one too, only we spell it Jaque Latin. And the dance comes from a collection of Dutch dances (which may explain the weird spelling of "Jacques"), so right, it obviously made its way around Europe.

@jonberger remarkably quickly too. It’s thought to have been been a bit of a hit, appearing in collections on both sides of The Irish Sea almost immediately after being composed in Ireland. The story of Jack Latin is fascinating. https://www.itma.ie/drawingfromthewell/edwina_guckian/

@bagpie Thank you! That's absolutely fascinating. (And weirdly reminiscent of Will Kemp's "Nine Daies Wonder.") The English country dance community pronounces the "Latin" the French way, probably because "Jaque" looks vaguely French, but clearly it's meant to sound like the English word. I'll circulate that article to the ECD crowd, not that they're likely to change any time soon.
