An old fashioned single story brick building with stone windows, two gables and a tiled roof almost entirely fills the frame. (It is the Cross Restaurant, previously the Coventry Cross pub.) Hanging in front of the windows are two pots; in this black and white photo we can't see what they are, but they cast dramatic, strong shadows to the left and slightly downwards in the low afternoon sun.

The cottage is built from visible, now black-painted timbers filled in with white-painted panels, traditionally wattle and daub, sometimes replaced with non-structural brick. All the cottages on this side of the street would originally have been built this way, but most have been "modernised" with brick walls, like the ones seen left and right of this cottage.

Fading leaves from potted Hosta plants. The leaves are almost oval shaped, asymmetrical and pointed. Their colour varies from green with white edges (the summer colour) through yellows to browns. On a small patch of grass in front of two houses, two large straw figures have been built. Both are in traditional german costumes; the male figure has a straw hat and a blue shirt, while the female figure has a red waistcoat and straw pigtails. On the step of the red brick house behind is a small "gingerbread" house. There are several windows behind, and a bush climbing the wall with orange berries, a pyracantha I think. In the foreground a small sign is fixed in the ground saying "PTA 28 Hansel and Gretel".

We look down the hill so see mainly the huge beams used to open the lock gates, and the black and white columns housing the mechanism for opening the sluices. All manual! The canal is wider than most; this is the Grand Union Canal, doubled in width in the early 20th century in a vain attempt to compete with the railways.

Divided birch. Not a great photo, but the last I've ever taken of this tree, which I have used as a subject for years. When I last walked past the right hand limb was gone! Health & safety trimming I suspect.

@carusb poor tree it always makes me sad to see trees hacked at tho I understand it's sometimes necessary to save them, one of my neighbours has done it to the trees at the top of her garden as they are part Of a row on a shared wilderness it looks just wrong but hey --

@Robbins Yeah I hate pollarding... but I think they had to do something. There is a 6 foot plus vertical split in the trunk, right the way through and 4-5 inches wide at the top. Given how many tons of oak were on either side of that split, specially in summer, and it being a public park, it would soon become a substantial public risk in a storm. Better try this than cut it completely, although that may yet happen.

@tomnorthfilm Thanks Tom. That was the rain-soaked week long photo trip to the Glencoe area in Scotland. We stayed just 100 yards from that beach. Everyone was going down so I thought, might as well!
