Divided birch. Not a great photo, but the last I've ever taken of this tree, which I have used as a subject for years. When I last walked past the right hand limb was gone! Health & safety trimming I suspect.

Grand Union Canal 2. A narrowboat moored at the towpath, the modern broad lock with its sluice winding gear standing up at an angle, and the beams to open the gates. Harder to see is the original narrow lock on the right, closed off with water spilling over.

@carusb Wonderful English scene.
@tapasinthesun Thanks Rom. There are several canals round here, quite often used by our walking groups, too.
@carusb poor tree it always makes me sad to see trees hacked at tho I understand it's sometimes necessary to save them, one of my neighbours has done it to the trees at the top of her garden as they are part Of a row on a shared wilderness it looks just wrong but hey --
@Robbins Yeah I hate pollarding... but I think they had to do something. There is a 6 foot plus vertical split in the trunk, right the way through and 4-5 inches wide at the top. Given how many tons of oak were on either side of that split, specially in summer, and it being a public park, it would soon become a substantial public risk in a storm. Better try this than cut it completely, although that may yet happen.
@carusb yes it's sometimes the only way to save them not sure about the three trees in my neighbours garden tho
@carusb Nice photo but what awful vandalism of a tree.
@Indyposterboy Agreed. But (repeated) I think they had to do something.
@carusb you could just have pasted the URL of your other reply so you didn’t have to repeat yourself
@carusb Wow, that’s a wonderful photo. I love how the clouds and waves are in consort with each other.
@tomnorthfilm Thanks Tom. That was the rain-soaked week long photo trip to the Glencoe area in Scotland. We stayed just 100 yards from that beach. Everyone was going down so I thought, might as well!
@carusb beautiful shot! Do people long boat on (in?) this canal? I would love to experience a couple of days of long boating someday.
@shom Yes, I've been back to that place multiple times. It's particularly nice in colour on winter afternoons as the sun streams from the right.
Yes, lots of people use the canal, for walking, cycling and on the narrow boats. This section is part of the "Hatton Stair" of 22 locks, lifting the boats up from Warwick to the Birmingham plateau. It takes half a day or so to traverse (the locks are all manual). Boating is fun, but I can usually walk faster!
