Pete Walkden

Sitting Pretty.

A tiny mountain hare leveret sitting bolt upright, ears raised to listen to every unusual sound it hears. It pays to be ultra cautious when you're this small.

I photographed this gorgeous little character for over an hour on a summer's day, on a hillside in the Scottish Highlands.

Brown when growing up, but white in time for the winter. Incredible creatures.

@petewalkden That's beautiful! How do you get into the right place to wait for an encounter like that? Is there a lot of research and planning beforehand? I've always been curious about that.

@macronencer Local knowledge, patience, binoculars, a careful approach and a slice of luck.

@petewalkden I see! Thanks for the comment. I really respect your dedication and perseverance.

@petewalkden Lovely! Been a while since I’ve had a good leveret encounter.

@jamesroddie Me too. I've been so busy on Mull with work since the lockdowns that I've not had much of a chance to visit the Highlands at the right time of year for them. Maybe this summer...

@petewalkden so alive! How can people bear to hunt, trap, harm them.

@petewalkden This is a gorgeous pic, thanks for sharing

@petewalkden No better way to spend a day. Fabulous shot 😊

@petewalkden Looks like the rabbit on Monty Python.

@petewalkden i just wanna boop his cute little nose

@petewalkden absolutely beautiful. It always amazes me to think there are people in the world who fail to see the wonder in the world around them. Thank you so much for sharing ❤️

@petewalkden So beautiful! We have a real problem here in Wiltshire with Hare Coursing sadly, with gangs coming from far away. Muddied number plates to make identification difficult

@petewalkden One of the things I like the most about alt-text, beyond its obvious purpose, is how much it adds to the image. Emotions, subtlety, a point of view that it's part of the image but also transcends it.
Great photo and description.

@petewalkden just love how you articulate the size & stature of this lil bunny having to be alert for self preservation
