Have you ever noticed the apparently bricked up windows on Glasgow tenements and wondered what that's all about?
There are many theories floating around, but the real reason is to provide symmetry and balance when the architect couldn't put real windows in the spaces rather than having a blank bit of wall.
There are two main reasons why the achitect couldn't have filled the spaces with real windows. If they are above the close door (as is the case with the building on the left), then they are there because of an internal staircase. If there are chimneys on the roof above them (like the building on the right), then they are there because of where the internal fireplaces and chimney flues are.
@thisismyglasgow Here's a Q .. This is from W Prince's Street at the south end of Rupert Street. The flats don't have access to the area in red and the rooms end at the red line to the right. Any idea why?
